New York has become the new home of Frida Escobedo's designs. After undertaking the remodeling of a wing of the MET (Metropolitan Museum), she is developing her second most ambitious project in the state: Bergen, the architect's first condominium in this city.

Mexico City-based architect Frida Escobedo, Bergen's author and the recipient of the 2024 Charlotte Perriand Award, is known for her bold concepts, which include a latticed structure for the 2018 Serpentine Pavilion in London and a treehouse-like hotel in Quintana Roo. Recently she has been working on new projects in New York, including the expansion of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and this residential scheme - her first condo development in the city.

Standing on a tree-lined avenue in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, Bergen is a new residential project designed by Frida Escobedo's Mexican Studio for Avdoo & Partners Development.

Avdoo & Partners Development aims to help Bergen strike that balance between unique and contextually sensitive. Thus, it is designed with a low-stance and rhythmically-pleated facade to create proportions that echo the surrounding townhouses. Its pleated facade, constructed with custom-made blocks that vary in size and opacity, celebrates the interplay of light and air, while its orientation is strategically considered to maximize natural light from both the east and west. The overall design is shaped with a cohesive rhythm in terms of scale, materiality, and color, with porosity and transparency woven throughout the building's form.

Boerum Hill will soon welcome a seven-story residential project designed by Mexico City–based Taller Frida Escobedo with a low-stance, rhythmically pleated facade. The building will feature 105 condominium units designed by Workstead, with an emphasis on indoor-outdoor living and private outdoor gardens for 75 percent of the units. Collaborating with landscape designers DXA Studio and Patrick Cullina, the scheme prioritizes natural light and porosity while fostering community through amenities like the Glass House, communal spaces, and outdoor terraces.

The Bergen building, still under construction, will rise above most of its neighbors.

Contemporary additions are welcome to the quiet neighborhood provided the architecture is subtle and sensitive to its landmark neighbors.

Since founding her eponymous Mexico City-based studio in 2006, Frida Escobedo has captured some of the world's most sought after commissions. In 2018, Taller Frida Escobedo designed the Serpentine Pavilion, making her the youngest architect to ever do so. Then in 2022, her office was commissioned to design the new modern and contemporary art wing at the Met, another major milestone for the young firm. Now, Escobedo is designing her first residential condominium project in New York.
